Est-ce que la localisation pourrait conduire le futur de la simple SIM card? : http://www.andrewgrill.com/blog/index.php/2008/07/could-location-drive-the-future-of-the-humble-sim-card/. "As a tool that securely manages a subscriber’s identity, the SIM is the only remaining element of the mobile an operator actually owns. The way in which an operator chooses to use the SIM could offer huge potential to drive revenues from the next generation of mobile applications. For a service like social networking, by adding the element of a person’s location, the SIM is offering a new opportunity to provide actual relevance to a user’s browsing. [...] To enhance the way a person uses social networking on their mobile, location technology delivered on the SIM could play a pivotal role. By introducing the long held desire of real-time subscriber location, operators could energise social networking sites and provide users with an enhanced contextualised service that most PCs could not offer. On a handset, this could include status updates about a person’s location or presence, give an alert if friends were in close proximity to each other or alternatively provide location specific information when signing in to the account."

"Australian telco Telstra has developed the antidote to lonely evenings by launching a new location-based service called "Whereis Everyone". In return for a small fee subscribers can keep constant track of friends and family via small maps sent to their mobile devices and consequently arrange meetings more easily, so the phone company says. The new service uses Telstra's Assisted Global Positioning System and its network positioning system. The idea is that the user can be located whenever his or her mobile phone is switched on and within an area covered by Telstra networks. Should the user wish to be alone, or, for whatever reason, disguise their whereabouts from a wife, husband or partner, the user can switch off the whereabouts button. However, this of course may lead to close questioning as to why the service was switched off and what the user was trying to hide."
"In-car WiFi to Hit the Road Next Year" : http://www.bwcs.com/news_detail.cfm?item=7533&from=mdd. "US car maker Chrysler will this week announce its new UConnect Web System for its cars. The company reportedly plans to introduce the WiFi on-board system into some of its vehicles from next year. Chrysler says it will effectively turn new cars into moving broadband WiFi hotspots with drivers and passengers able to access the internet from the dashboard. The system, which is supported by Microsoft, is expected to appear first in 2009 on new versions of the company's larger Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge models. Chrysler said that the WiFi connections will be supplied via normal mobile phone networks and that motorists wishing to use the service will be charged a monthly fee. A spokesman for the giant car-maker, quoted in the US press earlier in the year, said that Chrysler intends to be the first automobile company to offer in-car internet access. In fact, BMW also unveiled a similar in-car system at the Geneva Motor Show this spring, though the German company has not yet said when it will add such features. From what the US car company has said, it appears that the router will be fitted into the in-car radio and will assist with navigation as well as providing drivers, or hopefully, their passengers, with internet access via a browser. Some car rental agencies, such as AVIS, already offer in-car WiFi hotspot services as a premium service in some markets where business travelers can't wait to find a Starbucks coffee shop or a bookstore to stop and check company email."

"Seeker Wireless powers innovative new Local Zone product from Vodafone New Zealand" : http://www.andrewgrill.com/blog/index.php/2008/07/seeker-wireless-powers-innovative-new-local-zone-product-from-vodafone-new-zealand/. "Seeker Wireless, one of the leading location based service technology companies announced today that its SeekerZone solution has been deployed to power the new Local Zone product launched this week by Vodafone New Zealand. Created expressly to support fixed mobile substitution strategies, SeekerZone allows operators such as Vodafone to motivate subscribers to continue using their mobile phones instead of a fixed line by setting innovative tariffs for subscribers around their "local zone". Unlike HomeZone solutions currently deployed in Europe, the Seeker solution provides much smaller home zones, meaning mobile operators can reduce the revenue leakage caused when subscribers attempt calls some distance from their actual home. Results from recent operator trials and live deployments have shown that by locating mobiles more accurately, Seeker is able to greatly reduce the size of home zones by up to 45 times compared to existing Cell-ID based home zone systems. Seeker’s technology has an accuracy rating of several hundred metres for built up urban areas, and the use of smaller zones by Vodafone New Zealand and other mobile operators means that affordable home calling is now available on a standard mobile phone. Seeker’s unique technology does not require operators to invest in new handsets or add-ons such as GPS. It can be deployed quickly as the solution is pre-loaded onto the SIM card and does not rely on the design and manufacture of new chipsets or devices, and works on both 2G and 3G networks..."
Whrrl et l'attraction aux réseaux LBS (vidéo) : http://mashable.com/2008/07/18/whrrl-and-the-attraction-to-location-based-social-networks-video/. "It was very clear to most of us not in line for the iPhone that the most exciting aspect of the iPhone 3G release were the GPS capabilities. We haven’t seen more announcements for locationally aware social networks come across our newsbox here at Mashable (or anything that takes advantage of GPS technology) before or since. One such network is one called Whrrl. It’s not particular to the iPhone, but it is one location aware socnet that’s been getting a fair amount of buzz lately. Kristen initially reviewed it here at Mashable, describing it as "Yelp Plus Twitter." [...]. Téléchargez le MP4 : http://ads.episodic.com/download/e26/f20/location-based-networks-and-whrrl.mp4

Localisation, localisation : YouTube teste le "geo video search" : http://news.cnet.com/8301-1023_3-9988960-93.html. "It can be hard to find a needle in YouTube's vast video haystack, despite the fact that the site is owned by search expert Google. But YouTube is apparently trying to take a page from its parent company by improving its search features, a little bit at a time. YouTube product manager Brian Glick said that the company plans to broadly add geographic search to the site so that people can find video clips tagged with specific locations. The company is already testing the geographic search feature by including a thumbnail of Google Maps in a search for a specific location, e.g. "San Francisco green events," along with related videos from the area. In a nice touch, people can also move the location dot on a Google Map to see new related videos in that area. More than a year ago, YouTube began allowing people who uploaded videos to tag clips with a location. But the company had yet to offer the ability to search videos by geography. Meanwhile, Google Earth had started giving people links to location-specific videos in a YouTube layer it offered last October."

"While many Location Based Services applications, such as friend finders and location-based search, will be launched by carriers in the next few years, personal navigation will remain the most important LBS category providing high value and clear benefits to end users, according to a new study from ABI Research. However, according to ABI Research principal analyst Dominique Bonte, "Enterprise LBS applications for asset and vehicle tracking and work force management will become an important revenue generator for carriers in the future as companies will increasingly deploy mobile solutions to reduce costs, increase efficiency and improve customer service. As the reliability and performance of mobile enterprise solutions improves and the concerns about maintenance costs, data protection and integrity are addressed, corporations will increasingly adopt mobile solutions and LBS applications in their daily activities."
"Marriage of GPS and Web proves boon to some" : http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/07/11/AR2008071103296.html?hpid=topnews. "The market for location-based cell phone services has almost tripled in the past year as the pairing of GPS tracking applications and Internet browsing has proved a bonanza for merchants, online advertisers and other businesses as well as a convenience for parents and people who want to keep track of their friends. But the tracking features may also let unintended audiences keep tabs on their whereabouts."
"Next step: Parking spot reservations?" : http://www.nytimes.com/2008/07/12/business/12newpark.html. "San Francisco will experiment this fall with a sensor system that advises motorists where they can find the rare empty parking space on city streets. The sensors, connected to 4-inch-by-4-inch strips of plastic that are attached to pavement beside the parking spots, will alert people either by overhead street signs or a smartphone alert. The technology also will enable users to feed their meter via their handset."
